What matters
Fibrous peel remnants do not become pleasantly tender simply by longer baking.
Air fryer white asparagus wrapped in cooked ham with Gouda and butter. Peel and precook the spears before bundling and baking them briefly.
Why this recipe works
Two vegetable sides without potatoes. Weigh after peeling and trimming woody ends. Ham and cheese mean this is not a vegetarian asparagus dish.
Recipe
Air fryer white asparagus wrapped in cooked ham with Gouda and butter. Peel and precook the spears before bundling and baking them briefly.
Peel asparagus thoroughly from below tips and trim woody ends. Boil in lightly salted water about 12 minutes until nearly tender. Drain well.
Butter a shallow dish. Make two small asparagus bundles and wrap each in ham. Add pepper and scatter Gouda over. Use a heatproof dish suitable for the appliance, leaving space around it for airflow. Do not preheat with loose paper.
If required by the manufacturer, preheat for 3 minutes at 170 °C. Bake about 10 minutes at 170 °C. Cheese should melt and ham and asparagus heat through. Test the thickest spear with a knife.
Lift bundles with a wide spatula. If spears are still firm, continue at the same temperature rather than simply browning harder.
