Why this recipe works

Soft bars, not dry biscuits

The mixture makes eight small bars; two are one snack portion. A dish about 16 × 12 cm keeps the layer roughly 1 cm thick. Preparation includes 10 minutes soaking and 20 minutes cooling.

Ingredients

Method

  1. 1

    Prepare

Check dates for stone fragments, chop and soak in warm water for 10 minutes. Blend together with the water into a thick paste using a suitable blender.

  2. 2

    Mix and season

Mix oats, almonds and cinnamon into date paste. Oil the dish and press mixture firmly and evenly into it, including corners. Use a heatproof dish suitable for the appliance, leaving space around it for airflow. Do not preheat with loose paper.

  3. 3

    Cook

If required by the manufacturer, preheat for 3 minutes at 160 °C. Bake about 18 minutes at 160 °C. Edges should be lightly browned and the surface set. Do not roast to a hard, black crust.

  4. 4

    Check and serve

Cool for 20 minutes and cut into eight bars. Once fully cool, cover and refrigerate, and eat within 2 days.
