Dal Tadka

Dal Tadka is made of soft boiled lentils and a hot spice taka made from ghee, cumin, garlic, chilli and spices. The taka brings the main flavour.

    Cooking lentils

    Bring the lentils to the boil with water, turmeric and salt and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until tender.

    Dal creamy stir

    Mash the lentils lightly with a spoon until the dal is creamy. Keep warm.

    Tadka

    Heat ghee or oil. Roast cumin seeds, garlic, ginger and chilli briefly until fragrant.

    Add tomato and spices

    Add the tomatoes, garam masala and chilli powder to the taka and simmer for 3 minutes.

    Merging

    Pour the Tadka over the dal, season with lemon juice and coriander and serve hot.
