What matters
A deeply pressed centre holds egg better than a shallow dent.
Air fryer egg and cheese toast in a closed shallow dish. Press a hollow into the bread for the egg and scatter Gouda around the edge before baking.
Why this recipe works
Two large bread slices with an egg each make two small breakfast servings. Cook eggs fully rather than serving runny yolks. A closed dish keeps egg out of the open basket.
Recipe
Air fryer egg and cheese toast in a closed shallow dish. Press a hollow into the bread for the egg and scatter Gouda around the edge before baking.
Butter a shallow dish. Put two large bread slices side by side and press deep hollows with a spoon, leaving the edges raised. Use a heatproof dish suitable for the appliance, leaving space around it for airflow. Do not preheat with loose paper.
Crack an egg carefully into each hollow. Any overflow stays in the dish and is served too. Season and scatter Gouda around the eggs.
If required by the manufacturer, preheat for 3 minutes at 170 °C. Bake about 14 minutes at 170 °C. Check near the end: whites and yolks must be set. Extend for larger eggs or a deeper dish. Check that the thickest part reaches at least 70 °C for 2 minutes; continue cooking if needed.
Lift each toast with any egg cooked alongside using a wide spatula. Serve promptly while bread edges are crisp.
