Oat Drink with Five Ingredients: What a Short List Reveals
Planet Oat has launched a five-ingredient oat drink in the United States. Short formulations are interesting, but they do not replace checking sugar, protein and added nutrients.
In short: Planet Oat has launched a five-ingredient oat drink in the United States. Short formulations are interesting, but they do not replace checking sugar, protein and added nutrients.
What the manufacturer has actually announced
According to the company's announcement, the drink contains no added oils, no thickening gums and no cane sugar. At the same time, the brand names four grams of sugar per portion of eight US liquid ounces, i.e. about 237 milliliters. "No cane sugar" does not mean "sugar-free". A start was announced in selected Walmart branches in the USA; availability in Germany does not emerge from this. (Source)
These are the manufacturer's specifications, not an independent product test. Kochzauber has tested neither taste nor foam behaviour nor laboratory values of this drink. Nor can any advantages be derived from the list compared to any other oat drink.
Fewer ingredients answer only one question
A short recipe first shows how few ingredients are listed. It does not automatically reveal whether a product fits your entire diet. The DGE points out that plant drinks can differ significantly from one another and from cow's milk in their nutrient composition. When replacing milk, particular attention should be paid to calcium, iodine, vitamin B2 and vitamin B12.
It is precisely this enrichment that can prolong a list of ingredients. It would therefore be too short to devalue it only because of its additional entries. The DGE recommends paying attention to appropriately enriched products or to other suitable nutrient sources in the diet. In addition, an inconspicuous kitchen warning applies for added minerals: Shake before consumption, since components can settle down.
Thus, the comparison in the shelf becomes fairer
- Same reference quantity: Compare nutritional values per 100 milliliters. Different sizes of manufacturers make direct comparison difficult.
- More than sugar: Look also at protein and the added vitamins and minerals. A value alone does not describe a complete nutrient profile.
- Matching purpose: Distinguishing between an occasional shot in coffee and a drink that replaces a larger part of previous dairy products daily.
- Own requirements: Check all ingredients for personal intolerances and allergens. The number of entries is not a substitute.
The aroma also decides for cooking
Our proposal for your own kitchen: try an unknown drink first in a small portion of your usual dish. For a hearty puree, different characteristics can be desired than for a sweet breakfast. Whether the concrete product convinces, can not be seriously promised without trying it out. The new US recipe serves here as an example, not as a purchase recommendation.
You can find ideas for experimenting with our breakfast recipes and vegetarian dinners. Adjust a recipe consciously and do not expect every plant drink to work identically in taste and technology. The most sensible clean label check is therefore: Is the list understandable and does the complete product fit my use?
