Germany’s official recall app has reached a new milestone. Which push filters help, how to compare batch and date information, and what to do when a product matches an alert.

In short: according to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the free app of the official portal Lebensmittelwarz.de has been downloaded more than 400.000 times. It informs about recalls and other relevant messages about food, necessities, cosmetics and tattoo products. Individually adjustable push messages are particularly useful. However, the exact comparison of product name, batch, package size, date and distribution area remains decisive.

What the figure of 400,000 downloads means

The joint web portal of the federal and state governments exists since 2011; the app was added at the relaunch on June 18, 2024. Up to the current notification, the BVL reported a total of 3.122 notifications on the platform, 323 of which were published in 2025. The download number describes the distribution of the app, not the number of active users and also no increase in dangerous foods.

The notifications shall be submitted by the competent authorities of the 16 Länder and the BVL in their respective areas of responsibility. Products that may be harmful to health, unsuitable or misleading for other reasons are published. In addition to food, kitchen items, cosmetics and selected children's products are also offered.

How to configure useful push notifications

In the app, you can choose which product groups and warning grounds a notification should appear for. This prevents important information from being lost in an excessive amount of irrelevant messages. For example, allergy-related households can follow allergenic recalls with particular attention; families can use the filters for baby and child products.

Those who regularly shop online or are often travelling between federal states should not set regional filters too tight. Callbacks can affect several countries or the entire nationwide trade. The settings are a personal pre-selection, but do not replace the search function if a product is specifically suspicious.

Why the product name alone is not enough

A recall often does not affect an entire brand or every product variant. The details stated in the alert are decisive. Check them directly on the packaging:

  • Product name and brand: Similar sounding varieties can have different formulations and production lines.
  • Charge or lot number: It limits the production process concerned and is often more important than the date of purchase.
  • Minimum durability or consumption date: Only the specified periods are covered by the specific recall.
  • Package size and EAN: Different sizes of the same product can be treated separately.
  • Distribution area: Some goods were sold only in certain federal states, branches or online channels.

If the packaging is missing, cash receipts, order history or customer account will help. In case of uncertainty, the manufacturer's or dealer's contact mentioned in the warning is the better source than a social media post without complete batches.

What to do when a product matches an alert

First follow the specific instructions for action of the official notification. Usually the product should not be consumed or used further and returned to the sales office or disposed of. Some recalls are addressed only to certain groups of allergy sufferers; others concern all consumers. The warning explains the reason and, as far as is known, calls possible complaints.

Those who have already eaten the product do not need to seek medical help automatically every time they call back. The key reasons for this are warning, consumed quantity, personal risk factors and symptoms. Medical advice should be sought in case of severe or unusual complaints, in case of persons at risk or if the notification expressly advises. Packing and batch information may be useful for the clarification.

A recalled food should not be passed on to others or "saved" by cooking, cutting or freezing on its own. Whether such a measure can control a concrete germ, foreign body or undeclared all-precision solver cannot be reliably assessed from the kitchen.

A recall is not the same as a public warning

Companies are basically responsible for safe products and can withdraw goods. Not every internal or precautionary recall is automatically published on the portal. The official platform focuses on notifications that are relevant for consumers and meet the published criteria.

Conversely, a portal note does not mean that every copy of a product group is dangerous. The exact scope is part of the information. Headlines on social networks often shorten these details, which is why the original message should always be a priority.

How to organise supplies for easier recall checks

A few simple habits make it easier to compare. Leave batch and date on the container for replenished dry foods or store the relevant packaging section. Label frozen portions with content and freezing date. The order history remains helpful when ordering online. This is particularly useful for longer-stocking products such as flour, nuts, spices and canned foods.

For replacement meals, a small flexible supply is worth it. Among recipes for ingredients and one-pot dishes, you will find ideas when an ingredient fails at short notice. A recall is no reason to throw away comparable products without matching batch hits. (Recipes by ingredients)

What the app can and cannot do

  • It bundles official notifications: it is therefore more reliable than unchecked forwarding or individual posts.
  • It filters according to personal interests: Product groups, reasons and regions can be adapted.
  • It explains terms: glossary and short notes help with reasons for warning and responsibilities.
  • It does not automatically scan the supply: Users must make the comparison with charge and date themselves.
  • It does not guarantee zero-risk supply: controls and reporting systems can reduce risks, but not detect any deviation immediately.

How it differs from the European RASFF system

The European Rapid Alert System RASFF serves above all for the exchange of information between authorities. Lebensmittelwarz.de, on the other hand, is the concrete German contact point for public product recalls and consumer information. A RASFF notification may concern products that were never in the German retail trade; a German warning mentions the details relevant to the local purchasing.

Today's occasion is therefore not a new recall and not a study of predictive models. It is about the scope and practical use of the official consumer offer.

Conclusion: Useful filters and an exact batch check

The new Download Milestone shows that official recall information reaches many people on the mobile. The most useful thing is when notifications are set to fit and warnings are fully read.

In the case of a hit, the following applies: The product is not assessed according to the title, but instead the brand, variety, batch, date, size and sales area. This protects the app without throwing away unnecessarily impeccable food.
